SJU Ushers in New Era With Acquisition of James J. Maguire '58 Campus

Campaign News 8 AUGUST 2008

Episcopal Academy Head of School Ham Clark and SJU President Timothy R. Lannon exchange keys to the new James J. Maguire '58 Campus.

When historians look back on the annals of Saint Joseph's University, the date 8/8/08 will be recounted as the day SJU transformed forever with the acquisition of the James J. Maguire '58 Campus. The 38-acre property, longtime home of the Episcopal Academy, will instantly transform every aspect of the University experience and position SJU to achieve its bold vision for the future. Not since relocating from downtown Philadelphia to City Avenue in 1927 had Saint Joseph's made such a dramatic move.

The property officially changed hands during a noon-time ceremony. University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. and EA Head of School Ham Clark completed the transaction by signing the deed and exchanging the keys to the 38-acre campus in front of a small gathering that included local government and civic leaders, current and past members of the Board of Trustees, members of University cabinet and the project's lead benefactors Jim and Frannie Maguire and Brian Duppereault ‘69.

“It's a remarkable day. What we're doing, most colleges and universities could not even imagine,” related University President Timothy R. Lannon. “Today is indeed a transformation of place, of people and of experience, which will permeate our university forever. This additional campus will provide for us limitless potential and affirms our position as a preeminent Catholic comprehensive university.”

University students, faculty and staff, along with alumni, family and friends are invited to be part of the transformation by attending the formal Maguire Campus Ribbon Cutting, in conjunction with Family and Alumni Weekend, on September 27 at 10 a.m.
