Maguire Family Challenges SJU With Latest Gift, Becomes Largest Single Donor

Campaign News 29 SEPTEMBER 2008

Jim '58 and Frannie Maguire and Fr. Lannon cut the ribbon to officially open the new Maguire Campus.

Already lead donors to Saint Joseph University's $150M With Faith and Strength to Dare, Jim ’58 and Frannie Maguire increased their support to the University with a pledge of an additional $5 million to the Maguire Campus.  University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. made the announcement at the Ribbon Cutting ceremony during Family and Alumni Weekend on September 27, which served to publicly open the new property.

This new commitment from the Maguires takes the form of a leadership challenge gift. The goal is to raise an additional $5M in new six- and seven-figure commitments, which the Maguires will match with their own gift. Their commitment raised the overall Campaign total to $114 million.

In his remarks Jim Maguire stated, “I'm honored and humbled to have my name permanently affixed to the new Saint Joseph's University Campus.” Adding, “The new campus, however, is not about me…it's about enhancing and enriching the educational experience of our students.” In closing his remarks Jim reflected, “The University changed my life 50 years ago and it was time for me to give back.

“I cannot begin to adequately express my gratitude to Jim and Frannie for their commitment and generosity to Saint Joseph's University,” remarked Fr. Lannon. “Their leadership in With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph's University will leave a lasting legacy, touching generations of students to come. We are honored by the Maguire's love for Saint Joseph's University and recognize the significant impact this gift will make in support of our mission to make a difference in the world as men and women for others.”

With this new gift, the Maguire family increased their support of the project to $15 million and became the largest single donor in the University's 157-year history.
